Free ChatGPT just got unlimited, here’s what that means for your brand

Free ChatGPT users get unlimited text chats and a new default model this week. For everyone, no subscription needed.

OpenAI is dropping the message limit for free users and making GPT-5.6 Luna the default model for every account without a subscription. Paying users get GPT-5.6 Sol, tuned for fewer hallucinations and a new slider that lets you control how much “thinking” the model does before answering. OpenAI’s own testing shows factual errors dropping 62% for Luna and 68% for Sol compared to the previous model.

What actually changes

Until now, free users had to wait for their message limit to reset. That cap is gone. Every free account can now chat without limits, and next week gets access to the new Think button for harder questions, a feature that sat behind a paywall until recently. Only file uploads and image processing stay capped for non-paying users.

The more accessible the strongest free model becomes, the more generic AI text shows up in your feed, your inbox, and your search results.

Why you’ll notice this in content

I see it nearly every day: a LinkedIn post, a product description, an email that reads perfectly correct but has no voice behind it. Once everyone has access to the same strong free model, that pattern only gets easier to spot. The text is rarely wrong. It just isn’t about anything specific anymore. Brands that keep writing their own material, with a concrete example, an actual opinion, or a detail only they could give, stand out more because of it. That’s also why we keep coming back to authenticity versus AI: the difference is in what you add to the text that a general model doesn’t have. We talk through shifts like this every week on our LinkedIn page.

For brands, this comes down to a choice. Let a general-purpose model write your marketing copy and risk blending into the crowd, or use AI as a tool inside a brand identity and tone that’s already defined? The second option takes more work upfront, but produces content people still recognize as yours, even when the rest of the internet runs on the same free model.

Conclusion

A stronger free ChatGPT is good news for anyone who wants to work faster with AI. For brands, it’s mostly a signal to lean harder into what a model can’t copy: an actual voice. Want to know what that looks like for your brand? See what we can do for you.
